Nokia N95 8GB Review : At first glance the Nokia N95 8GB camera phone has a limited amount of buttons. It gives the device its placid look. The front side caries the buttons for the menu, the multimedia menu, answering and ending a call. Directly below the monitor the buttons are found for confirming an option in the menu or to go back one step. When you slide down the slider system, the multimedia buttons appear. We find the play, stop, pause, next and previous buttons here. The Nokia N95 8GB multimedia buttons make operating the multimedia functions a child's play. When the slider system is slid up, the numeric keys appear. The numeric keys have good relief and give better tactile feedback. We can be brief about the picture quality; it is excellent. The sample photos speak for themselves. During the time we were testing the camera, we had a trip planned to the CES in Las Vegas. This was a perfect time to take the Nokia 8GB N95 with us to the States. The environments of Las Vegas are very nice to take test pictures. The camera performed well, especially in good light circumstances. The colors are bright and the captured pictures are clear. When shooting in badly lit circumstances the quality drops dramatically and we notice the shortcomings of the sensor and the pixel sensitivity. The usual shortcomings of today's mobile photography. It was only last week that I wrote at the end of my review of the Nokia N81 8GB that you should keep an eye open for my take on the N95 8GB. Well, if you waited, you may be pleasantly surprised; because I'd say the N95 8GB is a better device.
When I looked at the original N95 I was not overly impressed. Sure it crammed in the features, but I found the handset large, build quality less than stunning, battery life poor, GPS antenna iffy and general software running a bit slow. Hardly a ringing endorsement.
The original N95 has had several firmware upgrades since my review appeared which I understand have dealt with some of the issues. But the good news is that the N95 8GB is an all round better handset from the start. It is still a beast of a mobile weighing you down to the tune of 128g and measuring 53mm wide and 21mm thick. It is 99mm tall and when you open the slider to get at the number pad it grows to a staggering 130mm. In terms of its size and shape, then, this mobile is not for those looking for neatness - in fact it feels like a throwback to the clunky phones of yesteryear. It needs to offer a big payoff for requiring you to carry it.
The ‘dual slider' concept remains. The number pad slides out of one end, and out of the other, a bank of four buttons for controlling music playback. I wasn't bowled over by the concept last time round and it doesn't grab me much this time either, but as before, you can use these buttons to control music playback when you are in applications other than the music player, which could be handy.
fter receiving rave reviews following its initial release last year the Nokia N 95 was followed up by the exciting news concerning the impending release of the new Nokia 8GB handset, which by the way is now out. The first thing that was noticed upon seeing the Nokia 8GB was the obvious difference in the color of its case, because while the Nokia N95 was available
in plum and silver this new 8GB model is now available in a great looking matte black finish.
Also, one more very obvious feature of the Nokia 8GB is that it comes with a great movie already in it and ready to play. Its the Spider Man 3 movie and its a new marketing ploy that Nokia has implemented which worked on us by the way. The screen on the 8GB is different from the screen on the N95 in one big obvious way and that is that it is bigger on the 8GB.
The old screen on the N95 was 2.6 inches while the new screen on the 8GB is 2.8 inches, which doesn’t seem like a whole lot but the added .2 inches does make a difference when text messaging and also does mean a little less squinting when watching movies on the handset.
One thing that Nokia handset uses have been consistently asking for is more battery life and their wishes have now been answered with the 8GB. However; longer battery life also means a bigger battery and so the rear of the 8GB has been reconfigurated to make room for the larger battery.
